Salim and Quarraisha Abdool Karim scoop another international award

Durban scientists and infectious disease epidemiologists professors Salim and Quarraisha Abdool Karim have been honoured in Vietnam for their ground-breaking research on HIV prevention in SA. The award programme is part of the VinFuture Foundation, an independent, non-profit organisation set up by Phạm Nhật Vượng, the first Vietnamese billionaire and founder and chairperson of the largest Vietnamese conglomerate, VinGroup Corporate, with his wife, Phạm Thu Hương, to create meaningful change in the lives of millions by recognising and rewarding transformative innovation in sci-tech.

Dr. Pieter Cullis and colleagues win VinFuture Foundation’s first global sci-tech award

Dr. Pieter Cullis, a professor in UBC’s department of biochemistry and molecular biology, has been awarded the inaugural VinFuture Grand Prize alongside peers Drs. Katalin Kariko and Drew Weissman. The award recognizes the trio’s work on mRNA technology that paved the way for effective COVID-19 vaccines. The $3 million VinFuture Grand Prize is the first global sci-tech award from Vietnam. It was established to recognize breakthrough research and technological innovations which positively improve the quality of human life and create a more equitable and sustainable world for future generations. The prize is awarded by the VinFuture Foundation, founded by Vietnamese businessman Mr. Pham Nhat Vuong.

Pfizer/BioNTech Vaccine Creator Karikó Receives Vietnamese Science Award

Katalin Karikó, Drew Weissman and Pieter Rutter Cullis, the scientists behind mRNA technology for Covid-19 vaccines, received the first 3 million dollar VinFuture Grand Prize granted in Vietnam. The awards ceremony was also addressed by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh at the Hanoi opera house on Thursday, the University of Szeged said.

Zhenan Bao is awarded the VinFuture Prize for female innovators

The inaugural VinFuture Prize has selected Zhenan Bao, the K. K. Lee Professor in the School of Engineering and chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering, the winner of its Female Innovator award, a $500,000 prize dedicated to an outstanding female researcher or innovator.

At the culmination of a 5-day series of events on January 20, 2022, the $ 3 million VinFuture Grand Prize was presented to Katalin Karikó, SZTE, and Drew Weissman, professor at UPenn and Pieter Rutter Cullis, UBC. The research professor of the University of Szeged and his colleagues, the scientists who founded mRNA technology with their discoveries, took part in a symposium and educational programs related to the award ceremony.

Two Perelman School of Medicine Professors received the VinFuture Grand Prize for their contributions to the development of mRNA vaccine technology, providing the foundation for two COVID-19 vaccines. The annual VinFuture Prize is managed and sponsored by the VinFuture Foundation, an independent, non-profit organization based in Vietnam dedicated to honoring transformational technological innovations. The foundation was established in 2020 with a $100 million endowment from Vingroup Founder and Chairman Phạm Nhật Vượng, and his wife Phạm Thu Hương.

Nobel Prize winner Sir Kostya Novoselov talking about the VinFuture Prize

VinFuture Prize – the first global sci-tech award from Vietnam – managed to attract nearly 600 nominations from around the globe in its inaugural year. “It is a very impressive result that will contribute to the promotion of diversity and inclusion in the global scientific community,” Professor Sir Kostya Novoselov FRS, who was among the youngest laureates of the Nobel Prize in Physics when he was 36, told The Statesman.
