Dr. Anton Urfels specializes in water resources management and climate change adaptation in South Asia. He is a Senior Scientist in Water Management at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI).
In addition to his role at IRRI, Dr. Urfels is a consultant on water-related projects in South Asia and is completing his PhD at Wageningen University & Research. One of his key contributions stems from his work on the Cereal Systems Initiatives for South Asia (CSISA) project, an initiative that focuses on helping governments design and implement sustainable intensification pathways by promoting better agronomic practices, engaging the private sector, and strengthening the capacity of local institutions.
Dr. Urfels works at the intersection of sustainable intensification, climate change adaptation, and irrigated agriculture in the Easter Gangetic Plains. His research navigates agroecological and social challenges in smallholder, rice-wheat-dominated ecosystems where poverty and food insecurity present obstacles and opportunities for significant impact.
