“Science for Life” Symposium: Innovations in Transforming Cardiovascular Health and Stroke Outcomes

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of mortality worldwide, accounting for an estimated 17.9 million deaths in 2019, which represents 32% of global deaths. Of these, 85% were attributed to heart attacks and strokes. The majority of CVD-related fatalities occur in low- and middle-income countries.

However, a significant proportion of CVDs can be prevented by addressing key behavioral risk factors, including tobacco use, unhealthy dietary habits, obesity, physical inactivity, and excessive alcohol consumption. Early detection of CVDs is crucial, as timely intervention through counseling and pharmacological management can greatly improve patient outcomes (WHO, 2021.)
This symposium seeks to convene distinguished experts and researchers to explore cutting-edge advancements in cardiovascular healthcare, stroke prevention, treatment, and recovery.
The seminar is moderated by the globally renowned leader and innovator, Prof. Alta Schutte is a SHARP Professor and Principal Theme Lead of Cardiac, Vascular and Metabolic Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at UNSW (Australia); with a joint appointment as Professorial Fellow at the George Institute for Global Health (Australia). She holds honorary professorial roles at the University of the Witwatersrand and North-West University (South Africa). Recently, she received the 2022 Harriet Dustan Award of the American Heart Association, the 2023 Peter Sleight Excellence Award in Hypertension Clinical Research from the World Hypertension League, and the 2024 Distinguished Woman in Hypertension Award from the International Society of Hypertension. Joining her on this panel are:
  • Prof. Duc-Phu Bui, MD., Vinmec Healthcare System (Vietnam). Prof. Duc-Phu Bui has devoted his medical career to developing a heart surgery specialty in the Central Region of Vietnam and is considered the Vietnamese surgeon to perform the first heart transplant in Viet Nam.
  • Prof. Valery Feigin is Professor of Neurology and Epidemiology and the Director of the National Institute for Stroke and Applied Neurosciences, Auckland University of Technology (New Zealand), and Affiliate Professor of the University of Washington, (USA).
  • Assoc. Prof. Duy-Ton Mai, Bach Mai Hospital and Dean of Faculty of Stroke and Cerebrovascular Disease, Vietnam National University-University of Pharmacy and Medicine.
  • Assoc. Prof. Ngoc-Quang Nguyen is the Vice Director of the Vietnam National Heart Institute, Bach Mai Hospital; Vice Head of the Department of Cardiology, Hanoi Medical University.
